The Dunton Bassett & District Men’s Table Skittle League is one of the longest-running pub and club leagues in Leicestershire, bringing together players of all ages to enjoy a unique and historic pub game. The league runs across both the Winter and Summer seasons, with multiple divisions, knockout competitions, and a strong community spirit that makes Wednesday nights a highlight for many local venues.
Our aim
To promote, protect, and celebrate the traditional game of table skittles while welcoming new players and keeping the sport thriving for future generations.
What Is Table Skittles?
Table skittles — often called “Northamptonshire Skittles” — is a traditional pub game played on a raised wooden table. The aim is to knock down nine skittle pins by throwing three wooden “cheeses” (small rounded blocks of wood) in each turn.
How the game works
- Each player throws three cheeses underarm towards the pins.
- Pins knocked down count as your score for that throw.
- Any cheese or pin that bounces off the back cushion or net is a back ball and does not count (the pins are reset).
- The game is played in legs, usually with teams of eight players.
- In the Dunton Bassett League, a match consists of seven legs, with both teams competing either for legs won (Winter) or total pins (Summer).
It’s fast-paced, competitive, sociable, and full of character — part skill, part consistency, and part good pub banter.
How Our League Works
The Dunton Bassett Skittle League operates across several divisions, managed by an elected League Committee. Teams represent pubs, social clubs, and venues across the local area, with fixtures played every Wednesday at 8:30 pm.
League Seasons
Winter League: Matches decided by legs won
Summer League: Matches decided by total pins scored
Both seasons include:
- Full league programme
- Knockout Cup
- Waddington Plate
- Highest away score awards (league fixtures only)
- Singles and pairs competitions
- End-of-season presentation evening
The atmosphere is competitive but friendly, with a strong sense of community and tradition.
Teams and Players
Teams may register players before each season begins, with new signings allowed during the season (subject to the registration rules). Teams generally field 8 players, with clear rules allowing for 7 or 6 players when required. Players compete not only for their teams but also:
- Divisional trophies
- Highest away score awards
- Individual competitions
- Cup and Plate honours
The league welcomes newcomers of all ages (though traditionally adult male) who want to learn the game, join a team, or simply experience local pub sport at its finest.
A League Built on Tradition and Community
The League is run by a dedicated Committee responsible for fixtures, competitions, registrations, rule enforcement, and ensuring the sport continues to grow. With decades of history and a strong community following, the league is proud of its heritage and committed to keeping table skittles alive for future generations.
We’re always looking to welcome new players, new venues, and new supporters. Whether you’re a seasoned player or completely new to the sport, table skittles offers a warm, competitive and highly enjoyable experience.
